Header Styles

Heading or Header Styles in Word 2007 are found or accessed from the Home tab, in the Styles group. A style is basically a combination of formats. The more popular uses of styles are Word's Heading Styles. Say in your document you have headings at the top of each page, and each heading had a format of: size 16, bold font and Arial font. Instead of formatting each heading over and over on each page, you could simply modify a Word style like Heading 1 to match the format mentioned above. Then simply select your headings on each page and click on the Heading 1 style to apply the format. One very important reason to use Word's Heading styles is if you decide to later

create a Table of Contents to include your headings. You can automatically create a Table of Contents in Word, but only if you use Word's Heading Styles. In short, Word searches through your document for all of it's children (Heading Styles) and copies them into your Table of Contents with a corresponding page number they can be found on. While you can create your own headings without using or modifying Word's Heading Styles, know that you won't be able to create things like Table of Contents automatically.
